Are these SRB Taipan?

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if these are Taipan and what and where the name came from. The name Taipan suppose to be Chinese words. I built these back in the early mid eighties with all the hop ups from Ranch PitShop in California. They did not have a special name for them. I spent a fortune back then. They all have differential, special motor, longer and wider chassis and lexan bodies just to name a few. The bodies were custom painted myself. They are still in mint condition after all these years. I just gave them a tune up for the summer. :)

Those are awesome. Love all those vintage aftermarket parts. They look like they would dominate the track at the time

Taipan was an Australian company that combined all the good aftermarket parts into one vehicle. That way you could buy a top of the vehicle without having to buy an SRB first then only use two or three parts from it. Genuine Taipans also have the name engraved into the gearbox

Those have to be the most hopped up original cars I have seen on here in a while. I have a few bits here and there that I am simply "blingin" a chassis with, but not the full happy meal like yours. I mean there is very little original Tamiya parts on that Rough Rider, inclusive of the body. Very cool tricked out cars and thanks for sharing them with us. I have some parts here that I am still trying to figure out what they have been made for, namely aftermarket axle tube post things. I am sorry, I still don't know how to talk about an SRB chassis.

Those two are great specimens of vintage aftermarket parts.. I see a lot of goodies on it. Been collecting some parts to build them too. Takes quite a while to get them complete.. Are you going to run them?

Hello All,

You are right Crash Cramer, for the Rough Rider the only Tamiya original parts are the gear case, gear case cover, some gears and the underguard plate.

Hi, Cooltoys, The aftermark parts cost me an arm and a leg. They both have modified motors. The Rough Rider has a Race Prep torque brush motor. I can't even turn the motor axle shaft with my fingers. It is just overkill. I have ran them several times.

Here is my Godzilla Clodbuster smash over my two SRB. I shall take some more pictures for my Godzilla Clodbuster for a later post.

Oh boy, that could hurt, good thing it was a posed shot. LOL I am in the midst of attempting to build my Rough Rider, FINALLY, I still have to source rear shocks and a set of front axle tubes, after that I think I have most everything I will need to get the job done. I like getting all my needs down on paper before shooting over to eBay and I certainly hope to get some parts from TC members. When I finish building mine, I want to then sell off all my spares from the SRB chassis to help fund the bank account here while I am still on the mend.

With these two examples, you have a lot to do to keep up the impressive level on your next posts, good luck with that.

"Now thats what I'am talking about"....Two of the best I have seen..Parts are in pristine condition...The speed control on the Rough Rider is extremely rare..I have only seen one other on an old parts car...The servo has a sweep arm goes across the rheostat..Way cool...Nice Job.

Hi peleiku68, You are absoutely right about the speed control. It also has a double barrel heat sink. I have some rare aftermarket parts that I bet you have never seen these before. Another heavy duty mechanical speed control, dual rear shock mount, universal ball joint and an anodiz metal gear. :)

WOW, I haven't seen those before. I like that dual rear shock mount, there was another posted some time ago by SCOOTMIKE here: http://tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=122800&sid=985 It seems to be nearly like yours, but you can't see much of the mount device in his shots. It would make my life easier if I could mount FRONT shocks onto the rear by adding this simple bracket as I am lousy with front shocks and have no rear shocks. I even have all the parts for the shocks, I could use just the tubes.

I can't say I have seen the gears in any color but brass, but I am not that much of an expert on SRB chassis cars.

Is it just me, or do those RCH front shock towers ONLY work on the W I D E chassis plate?? I just mocked up a pair on my Rough Rider build only to find they won't let me put the body on, I don't have a W I D E chassis plate, only the standard width. I am not about to hack into my body to allow those towers to fit, I suppose I could swap them for the set of OEM on the Ranger or perhaps my re re Sand Scorcher, but I wanted my Rough Rider to have the most hop up parts that I had found over the years. Oh well, you can't win them all.

Thanks for continuing to add to this post, it reminds us all of the old parts around and it helps identify more things that we didn't know about at all. SCOOTMIKE has another post of a project car you might appreciate, it is here:

Enjoy,
Chris

Yellow cat. Those universals look like ones from MIP. Crash, the RCH front towers will only work with a wide front end chassis when using a stock body

Thanks for posting those instructions for the Race Prep dual shock adapter, I've misplaced mine.

If I'm not mistaken these use longer front shocks instead of the rear shocks.

I'm thinking of using them on a Ranger, might see if there is enough room to use a coilover kit on them.

I know on the RCH there is not enough room.

After seeing these stunning cars, it put me in the mood to go thru some parts and see what i have left, time to put something together.

Thanks again for sharing these cars!

Man I remember the Ranch. That was to this day the best track I have ever raced on. It was huge and it was awesome. Do you remember ever seeing the lexan Lunchbox shell on the 1/12 scale pan car chassis in the hobby shop? That was about as cool as the rear suspension that is on your cars! What about a chain smoking guy named Randy? Haha! Memories.

Here is a rare picture of a custom built from Ranch Pit Shop in their retail store and raceway back in the early eighties before it was sold to the Losi family. Those were the days.
