My first Tamiya kit was a Rough Rider way back when Beatties was king of the UK high street, and the summers were long and hot. My mate had a Cheetah (so slow!), my brother had a Sand Scorcher, and we had great fun finding new ways to break them. So followed an obsession which included a hopped up Holiday Buggy, a Lancia 037, a full Ranger XLT re-build for the Rough Rider, plus a Kyosho buggy which was a real disappointment. I longed for a Super Champ but couldn't afford one....
Then came girls, beer, cigarettes and motorcycles. My collection was sold bit by bit to pay for my new addictions.... I think the last kit to go (the Rough Rider) bought a stereo for my first car.
Roll on to 2003. 2 marriages, 3 kids, 12 motorcycles and god knows how many awful cars later here I am. Addicted to Ebay and buying anything that moved, just as long as I won it in the last 30 seconds! What a rush, and what a load of crap I'd bought. Anyone want a tent or a watch?
Then, there it was. A little Nikko RC 1/14 RC car going for a song. I bought it for my 4 year old son, but it went really well, so he didn't get a go for a few days. The old feelings came rushing back and I thought, 'let's Search on Tamiya....'
I now take great pleasure in buying in kits from all over the place if they a) interest me and b) look to be at a good price. I have made many mistakes, but I've also come across some really good guys who are members of tamiyaclub.
Update Feb'04 - The Boss is insisting that 60 (ish !) kits are too many. So it's divorce or sell some. I can't decide what to keep, so I'm going to leave it to fate and advertise them all..... sob!
March '04 - Oh dear. Got the Nitro bug now. I need a TR-15T......
