| description | This one means a lot to me. I love all Tamiya, especially vintage, and the buggy bodyshells that were released as bodysets rather than buggies in their own right are of massive interest to me. This is a 1989 Super Dragon shell mounted onto a mint vintage Hornet chassis. There was a 'Hornet only' Super Dragon bodyset set released a couple of years earlier but this particular set included mounts and cut lines for mounting onto a Thunder Shot family chassis and the Grasshopper II. Box Art is Hornet though and that's what this shell should be mounted on, in my opinion. I was lucky enough to have 3 bodysets so decided to use one. Glad I have spares because I totally murdered the flame decals. Just like the Saint Dragon, they are a total nightmare to apply. When I tried to remove to re-adjust, they ripped. Not good. I've sat on this for a couple of months now because I was so unamused about the dodgy flame decal application but I'm over it now and I've decided not to break into another bodyset as I can live with it. The other photos feature a runner Super Dragon shell that I have on a rere Hornet chassis, plus the 2 remaining bodysets that I have. I totally adore the Super Dragon. Thanks for reading and looking. J

Blue, now that might look cool with the decals.
Just looking at the magazine shot from your showroom and the Fire and Thumder Dragons both have black windows and if i m right they are both the early versions???
I cant remember what the '86 version said
@crash_cramer - the black window seems to be on the 1986 version only but I'm not sure what the guide sheet says. @jimbo would know. The 1989 sheet doesn't mention blacking the window and the set also includes a driver.
Thanks for sharing the Tamiya photo, makes my statement wrong.
Yep, not just the spot lights, but the Coro Coro logo is at the end on the decal sheet and not sandwiched between the word 'dragon' and the number 18!! Which is like the original '86 version.
@jimbo - could be. the image came right from the heart of Tamiya. The Spot Lights?
Interesting last picture, looks like a prototype mock up. As the decals are different to both versions I ve seen!
yep Rosey, I didn't want to say but you're right
You have done a great job, don't beat yourself up about it and my hat goes off to you for cutting and painting one of these up anyway. There are unfortunately are a few vintage bodies with some 'interesting' decals although looking at the flames for this, to get that split to line up, well, not even Tamiya themselves have managed to do a perfect job looking at that photo.
An associate took Tamiya Museum photos for us, exclusively for our website, during the Shizuoka Model Show. He also passed us some stock shots that Tamiya gave him. I've added one of those shots which is a good example of how tricky those flames are. You can see from the decal sheet that you need to marry the split up. Just about impossible and then they tear if you lift them. If I ever try it again, I'll apply them wet. Thanks all, J
Thanks Guys
Well, aside from your disappointment with the flames, I think you should take great compliment for even getting one of these out of the box and painting it all up and mounting it on its steed.. I think you did a great job and I know what you mean by the difficulty with the curves and the decals. I think if relief lines were made it would help, but then how would one line the cuts up??? It must have been something Tamiya never assembled themselves in house, rather they just drew it up and therefore didn't experience the pain of trying to decal it up properly??? Nice job.
And rightfully it means alot to you - it's an ODDBALL Tamiya and they are special and rare!
I can't say its my thing but it is very unique, cool and very Japan/Anime Tamiya style and a great piece for a collection
AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not bad Jr.
John, the decals look fine to me buddy
I can't say I'd take this over the stock body (probably b/c I'm just so use to the original look) but I have to admit this SD body looks good on a Hornet chassis. I like the sleek look and always appreciate something unique and rare.
Supercool!!! Mr,Weston
Lovely jubbly!! Nice one JW its a cracker!!!
Love it! Looks so much cooler than the stock Hornet shell I think.
These are great - very distinctive and just a little bit quirky ... could definitely do with one of these shells for my 2nd Hornet ...
Way cool! Never heard of it. Can't say it looks pretty, but it just looks fab! Like an old school F1 car!
Odd beast
