SRB Cage Racer - part 1

June 2014: Ever since I first saw a Sand Scorcher in a shop window in the early 80's, I knew there was one kit I would love to have/build.
Of course until 2009/10 it was all but impossible financially to buy an SRB kit, and by then I already had my 'Fro-Sco' (built on a Frog chassis) to satisfy my Baja Beetle need...
I also felt it would almost be a shame to cover all that lovely scale suspension with a conventional body shell... so ultimately came up with the following plan: effectively a two-seater Rough Rider Baja style cage-racer, that I hope will really show off the 'mechanical' nature of the SRB subframes, in a vehicle that is a little more unique - as is my style ;o)
So in part one of this project, let me introduce you to the fundamental components, and where this project is going...
My idea is to mate a Twin Hammers cage with the SRB front and rear subframes, using a custom aluminium chassis. Ultimately it could be quite a long-term build, as I want to incorporate a number of high-end (read high-priced) components, such as scale shocks (twin on the rear), a scale engine and a detailed interior...
Perhaps most importantly, I will need to design (and have lazer-cut/folded, to do the rest of the high quality components justice) a completely new chassis plate to mate everything together... Plus I have already designed a retro-fit hub to mount 12mm hex wheels onto conventional 2WD front axles that will need to be machined/3D printed... hopefully those won't delay the build too much, as without them it's going to be tricky!
Hope you like where this is going, and that it is not so far removed that the purists will still allow me entry to the exclusive SRB sig group ;o)

There it is !!! we've discussed this project a few times. Really looking forward to seeing this progress. Have you started a thread for the build. ?
Keep them coming J, great to see you using my favourite components

Thanks guys! - of course you two really are the inspiration for all this ;o) There is a build thread here: [Click here] and I'm hoping to get the chassis template cut out in the next couple of days - after remeasuring, it looks like it might be essentially a flat sheet after all, which should make things a lot simpler...

First pic gives a great outline to how good this will be once finished, cant wait to see final product.

Looks good so far, enjoying the thread too. Please keep it coming.

Too bad I was too late to avoid the cutting of the torsion bars. I have a pair of the brass bits here that had that happen to it already, I found that the Super Champ pins worked on my Ranger as I don't have a torsion bar suspension on it, just the coil overs and the RC Channel rear end. I have an extra OEM plate here that if you feel is long enough in its form to start, will send to you for some modifying.

This will be one to watch for sure. Nice mock up, it's got my saliva going. LOL Can't wait for another instalment , always love your work.

Hi Crash' - aha, I did wonder if those brass parts were available separately - of course, the Super Champ would have had them... Not to worry though, I like to think it shows commitment to the project ;o) As for the chassis - thank you for the offer, but I know the stock one is going to be at least 20mm too short, and also the holes for the front uprights will need to be slightly wider (by about 6mm) so the cage fits between them... I'll be getting the cereal packet and scissors out tomorrow I hope! Jx

Nice project! If You need wider tubes in the front You can go för the expensive rch-kit found on ebay or You can buy these and make the exactly as long as You need them! I did this on my crp 'butterfly-replica' and with a little polishing there´s no way of telling if they are original or not. I drilled out the solid, middle rod and made new threads. This way it fits just like the original ones. Good luck! [Click here]
