SRB Cage Racer - part 1

June 2014: Ever since I first saw a Sand Scorcher in a shop window in the early 80's, I knew there was one kit I would love to have/build.

Of course until 2009/10 it was all but impossible financially to buy an SRB kit, and by then I already had my 'Fro-Sco' (built on a Frog chassis) to satisfy my Baja Beetle need...

I also felt it would almost be a shame to cover all that lovely scale suspension with a conventional body shell... so ultimately came up with the following plan: effectively a two-seater Rough Rider Baja style cage-racer, that I hope will really show off the 'mechanical' nature of the SRB subframes, in a vehicle that is a little more unique - as is my style ;o)

So in part one of this project, let me introduce you to the fundamental components, and where this project is going...

My idea is to mate a Twin Hammers cage with the SRB front and rear subframes, using a custom aluminium chassis. Ultimately it could be quite a long-term build, as I want to incorporate a number of high-end (read high-priced) components, such as scale shocks (twin on the rear), a scale engine and a detailed interior...

Perhaps most importantly, I will need to design (and have lazer-cut/folded, to do the rest of the high quality components justice) a completely new chassis plate to mate everything together... Plus I have already designed a retro-fit hub to mount 12mm hex wheels onto conventional 2WD front axles that will need to be machined/3D printed... hopefully those won't delay the build too much, as without them it's going to be tricky!
