As I have mentioned around these parts in the past, my very first introduction to Tamiya cars was with the summer 1985 promotional video that played on loop in my local Beatties model shop. In that video were the Hotshot, Hornet, Frog, Grasshopper, Mitsubishi Pajero...and the Rothmans Porsche 956. Now here we are in 2016 and Tamiya have re-released all but one of those models ...ok the Pajero has been significantly changed but the essence is still there... and I have added each one to my collection.

Now, Tamiya have actually brought out a tribute to the original 956 but alas only in it's NewMan livery. It seems that the Rothmans sponsorship will always be a block to bringing back any kind of a tribute kit to #58042.

So for that reason I decided that I would acquire the bits to build my own. When on the hunt though I couldn't actually even find a NIB #58521 Newman Porsche kit to use as a donor ...they seem to be in short supply these days ...so I had to go with this Toyota Toms kit..and even that was hard to find... and then buy the NewMan body parts set too.

Finally, I obtained an aftermarket Rothmans decal set and was good to go. I'm not sure who actually makes these but the quality is top notch.

Of course, I would love to have an original #58042 in my collection but they go for silly money these days so for now my own tribute re-release concoction will have to do. :-)

20 Nice looking artwork. 16 Box is tiny...could almost be a static kit. 12 A minimal amount of parts. 17 The metal bits. 15 The plastic bits. 21 Must surely be a very straightforward build. 13 Nice silhouette on the Toyota body. 15 The 956 is a better looker though IMO. 10 Especially with these applied. 12 Bought these two cheeky numbers for the show too.
