| description | I purchased this kit in 1996 a few months before my TA03F Pro kit. I upgraded the standard mini CVA shocks to non-Tamiya aluminum oil-filled shocks. I also installed a home-made front sway bar that I attached to the front shock tower with zip ties. The car is equipped with Kose titanium adjustable turnbuckles and full ball bearings. However, the biggest modification was the replacement of the standard Tamiya plastic tub chassis with an aftermarket HPI chassis. The HPI chassis is a semi-tub made from a plastic composite that resembles an Associated B2 chassis. A fiberglass upper deck not only strengthens the chassis, but also acts as a battery holder. The battery placement is lower and in-line with the chassis and not perpendicular to the chassis as in the standard Tamiya tub. This provides a slightly lower center of gravity and better performance in the corners due to the more optimum weight distribution. The only problem with the HPI chassis is the lack of space for radio gear. The steering servo is mounted on the top deck which leaves enough room for either a receiver or ESC--not both. There is some room on the sides of the chassis, but only enough to fit a micro-sized RX or a small ESC like an LRP Quantum Competition. There is ample room to fit standard-sized electronics on the Tamiya chassis. Both the Tamiya and the HPI chassis weigh about the same. Electronics used: Novak 410-M1 ESC,
JR NES 510 steering servo, Novak XXL micro AM RX, Reedy Ultra Mr. T Motor (17X3 I think), and Airtronics XL2P TX. Perhaps one day I will reassemble my HPI chassis TA02, but first I have to secure some new front and rear gearboxes.
