description  Well here we go on my first 'how to guide', how to paint a Super Clod grill. As you know the Super Clod has a completely chrome grill with 4x4x4 printed on it. Unfortunately with it being all chrome the 4x4x4 doesn't really stand out the way I think it should. The solution is to paint the recessed part black. I read about this trick a few years ago for painting grills, and never had a chance to try it out until now. It's a very simple task and only takes a few minutes of work.

* Step 1: Assemble the necessary items needed: the grill, fine line masking tape, denatured alcohol, paper towel, and spray model paint.

* Step 2: If you're painting a used grill clean it up with some soap and water.

* Step 3: Mask off the grill as you see in the picture. I personally use Tamiya's masking tapes with good results.

* Step 4: You will need to apply a small amount of the alcohol to paper towel that will be used to wipe off the excess paint. It is important to do this first before you paint, because the paint must be wiped off immediately after application.

* Step 5: Now that you have your masked grill, alcohol prepped towel, and paint in hand, go ahead and give it a spray. I've actually found it's better to apply the paint a little on the thick side so it will stay wet for the next step. Remember to spray it at all angles to get all around. The paint I used was Tamiya's semi-gloss black.

* Step 6: Immediately take your alcohol soaked towel, put it over the tip of your finger and use it to wipe off the still wet paint on the 4x4x4 area. You may have to resituate the towel over your finger tip after the first pass. The paint should wipe right off on only the 4x4x4 section.

* Step 7: Once you have removed the paint to your liking, let it dry and then re-coat as necessary. I used four coats to get what you see here.

Could be he was using a better grade of denatured than this one which like their other products seem to be hardware store stuff. If it were me and it has been, I use water based paint in my airbrush and wipe with water then clear coat for shine, hasn't disturbed the chrome yet. I concur about Tamiya tape with the edges sealed with Dively's mask.

@il_maligno, I didn't have a problem with that. I did this with three seperate super clod grills to test it out, and didn't have a single problem. To be sure, I'd recommend wiping the alcohol on the back of grill first to make sure it won't harm it.

I like the black grille. It makes a nice change to the normally all-chrome look.

Uhmm.. I tested this method on some chromed grills, but I've found that alchool wipe away the chrome as well as the paint, didn't happen to you?
