| description | I'd like to share some pictures of my 1979 VW Derby (where my username comes from )
Its a bit of an unusual model that normally gets mistaken for a Mk1 Jetta but its actually the saloon version of the MK1 Polo (a car not sold Stateside) In the UK VW only designated the MK1 saloon as a Derby - though in mainland Europe I understand early Mk2 saloons were also called Derbys.
My car is a '1F' facelift model - earlier cars had chrome bumpers & Polo round headlights (these were only available in the UK for 1 year so are very desirable) I brought from a guy in Surrey back in 2004, who had advertised it in the mag 'VW Driver' He had brought it off an elderly lady at his work who had just kept it for going to the shops & back etc. When I brought it, it only had 24,000 miles on the clock - it now about 35,000 miles.
As you can see i've lowered the suspension & its had a few sets of different wheels whilst i've owned it & generally kept on top of the little jobs that have needed doing.
I love its simplicity & boxy looks & I have plans (money & time permitting) To eventually have it re-sprayed & re-upholstered & to carry out some engine upgrades for a bit more poke out of its little 1.3 litre :-D

I have lowered my Cabby, but finding some good 13 inch tires might prove interesting. I guess you might entertain sending me yours then???
You know it needs some G-lader Polo Power under the bonnet
Oh mate that is so sweet! I wish we had got MK1 polos in Australia..
awesome motor mate
mmmm the derby, toyed with getting one of these, that or a mk1 polo. feel free to add it to the bugheads sig
old skool VWs are the best!! stick the G40 motor up front for some real poke!!
You should post this on VW Club
Brings back memories as I used to work on these when I first started in the motor trade. They were pretty thin on the ground back then. Looks like it's in good hands ... I've also got the obligitory Ace Cafe picture as I took my Capri on a London to Brigton run a couple of years ago. Start point was the Ace cafe
P.S; the Ace Cafe pic was taken at the Retro-Rides Award night
I cannot take the credit for the top picture - my good friend Toby took the photo... he used it in his portfolio for a photography course. Crash Cramer - those wheels would drop straight onto your Cabrio - but at 13' you'd need to lower it somewhat! I have a set of refurbed 14' Golf Cabrio/Scirocco wheels to go on it
Very nice amazing to find a good one if you dont all ready know about it then retro rides web site might be worth looking at [Click here]
Nice pic (upper)! Good looking Derbys are hard to find these day in Norway as well.
Very cool, hope you get to add it to the 1:1 SIG. I like the wheels in the first pic best, but if you don't like them anymore, I bet I could make them fit my 90 Cabriolet(Mk1 Golf convert) I am in the states so shipping will KILL ME.
Gorgeous! A truly rare sight these days, even in Germany. Not many have survived, as they were not very desirable... Yours is a gem though, love the first pic!
Cheers for the nice comments guys.. @ Skip665 - the top pic shows it as it is now on the 13' Smoor wheels, they do look good
Nice car. I would love to get a few models from Europe to the states. Especially the Focus RS.
wow the top pic looks seriosly nice and definately something a bit different you should join my sig your 1:1 rides
that is a lovely Derby! other than Ace Cafe, do you go to any other vw meets? I regularly attend the No-ricve meets in guildford and the PREPT meets at Brands Hatch, and I can guarentee you that your car would go down a storm at either of those! Very VERY nice mate!
Very nice - love old school watercooled veedubs - wheels in the top picture look best IMO
nice ride mate.
