Rat Look Runner (Part 2)
Working day to day with cars, repairing & restoring, I spend a lot of time in the company of rust. I know the techniques for rust repair but more importantly what car metalwork looks like in various states of decay. This gives me the edge when replicating it to a model vehicle. This said, it's honestly my first attempt at weathering a model car (or anything for that matter as im usually doing the total opposite, lol). Im lucky that the scorcher, as it stands, looks well used so my plan was to keep the originality of the car when I got it but just make it more reslistic looking. The first step was to paint all the bare plastic a coarse gunmetal (which i did by hand using a few diferent brushes). This gave me the base for the rust but i didn't know how far to go with the level of rust so got a few reference pics of the net (see attached). I had an idea what to use to replicate the rust effect but didn't want to use paint. When I was in my teens I was into the Games Workshop, Warhammer 40k hobby for many years, so im no stranger to brush painting minatures. I'm hoping I can use some of the old painting tricks I picked up then on this build. What did I use to replicate the rust??? Well that's a secret, but I bet most people have it in there homes right now!!! (I will tell all in future updates, lol). I applied the 'rust' using a two part five minute epoxy glue, then when this had gone off I lightly dry sanded the exposed area's till I got the desired effect. With this being a runner I changed the nose cone for a more abused counterpart & rust treated it to match the rest of the front. I used where the chrome had come off the lense housings to keep it authentic to how this scorcher is. I felt the numberplates needed to look worn as well, luckily this one came with an one originally damaged so it fits in nicely. I left the pink patch on the bonnet as this looks spittingly like filler. As things do when you start work on something the ideas were flowing consantly so im contemplating a partial front roof transplant for a damaged one I have as well...

It looks horribly real. Good work!

Looks cool, but surely the nose cone wouldn't rust as they are made from fibreglass

Fantastic job - the worst scorcher shell i've seen
Connor
This scorcher had a reinforced custom metal nose cone hence the reason why it's rusting, lol...

Amazing result!

I know the hood, fenders & nose cone are made out of fibreglass on a real Baja Bug, but fictionally speaking all the panels on my Scorcher are made from metal, just so I don't upset any of you purists out there...

Sorry Connor, I had to mention the rust and fibreglass thing I see many people do this rust on Scorchers, but no one ever mentions the mistake lol... I like your comeback and the fact your SS has a proper metal fabricated front end
Sad Sammy
Theres a lot of talent involved to make something look bad? Well done, very rusty!
Connor
My scorcher also dosen't have an engine, seats or even a driver, just before anyone else points that out

Great job, looks very realistic! Love how the rust has eaten up the front.

Fantastic work. My guess is caramelised sugar or chilli powder rust!

I am going with Paprika, Nice rust bucket you are building there
Connor
@ Crash - you've hit the nail on the head pal!!! Yeah paprika mixed with a bit of epoxy then lightly sanded when it's set. Then you can dry brush with some fine silver or dab a bit apply a bit more glue here & there then sprinkle the paprika on for a lighter rusty effect. Effects vary with technique but all the results are good
