August 2008: Since a pukka Sand Scorcher is really out of my price range, I thought I'd build the next best thing... in fact if Tamiya ever decided to re-release a beetle kit, I reckon this could be the way to go?

This is my first project built out of entirely new parts - and it was a joy to open all the little packets and get to work! The chassis is a re-release Brat kit, and I really love the rear end trailing arm suspension and horizontal aluminium shocks. The front track is a little wide for the Beetle shell perhaps? although I notice the original 'Scorcher was pretty wide up front... I might fit some narrower wheels and tyres on the front, and likewise something more chunky on the rear - I quite like the Hornet combo. Whatever I end up with, they need to be a bit bigger diameter I reckon?

The wheelbase of the Frog was perfect for the Blitzer Beetle shell, and mounting the body shouldn't be too much of a problem - I want to keep it neat and simple and as 'factory' as possible mind you.

I love the Class-5 Baja bugs here in Tamiyaclub, and am tempted to go that way to a degree - although the proportions of this shell seem pretty perfect already? I have a paint scheme in mind (it won't be SS box art that's for sure!), although I have indulged in a Sand Scorcher sticker set from the TC shop!

I wasn't going to build this kit up until I'd completed the STUMPkin project, but I just couldn't help myself - I needed to know it would work, and I think it just might!

Let me know what you think, and any hints and tips gratefully received! Jx

Early days, but I feel the concept is sound... The Frog Scorcher! all new (Tamiya) parts so far... love those dog bones and trailing arms! front track a little wide perhaps? wheelbase perfect though... Blitzer bodyshell was complete NIP kit Brat chassis a joy to build!

Do the Body mounts Reach ? I was interested in doing this as well as I have a bunch of Frog parts and a beetle shell

The front post (from the Brat kit) is the correct hight, although it is a little too far forward really... but I'll just re-drill the hole in the shell and fill the original. Not sure about the rear mounts yet - the existing holes in the rear wings of the Blitzer shell are high enough above the shocks, just got to find a decent way of mounting a couple of body posts horisontally..

Great project! The sad truth is propably that no rere SS will ever see the light of day. I´m also very tempted to make a clone on one of the rere-chassis and the frog is a very nice choice. Maybe grasshopper-wheels in the front would not make it so wide? Post more pics!

Its a really good combo! I'm curious what you?make of it. Maybe the body can go just a little lower? Build on and enjoy it!

Hi Case1 - I agree, the body is not in the final position yet (just resting on in fact) - but I might go for a slightly larger wheel/tyre combo anyway, so the clearance would be required...

I guess it's a bit like the kit-car community? Eventually we'll see more hybrid Scorchers than originals, like the AC Cobra? xx

Looks really good, i thought about doing the same at one stage. SS box art is boring, you soon get sick of seeing blue and white. Keep us posted on what you decide on coz i need some ideas as well
