This is a project I've been working on for a while. Since it's been raining the last few days I decided to build some on my indoor RCs. It started out as a 1:32 scale Monogram Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster static kit. I've added a bit of extra detail to the outside with the roll over bar and bonnet scoop.

Inside the Cobra is where things get interesting. The wheels were turned down from Scalextric F-1 tyres and the front face cut off the rims so the model Halibrand covers could be glued on. The motor is from a Losi Micro-T and is mounted in the front of the car between the front wheels. A driveshaft runs full length of the chassis to a slotcar geared rear diff with a solid axle. A micro flight steering servo is mounted behind motor, it's all a very tight fit. In the back of the car is the 4.8v Micro-T battery and a Mini-Z radio board. The steering is all hand made and doesn't have suspension as such. The headlights and tail lights work. There is also circuitry for brake lights (has two red LEDs either side). When you lift off the power, the brake lights come on.

Paint was applied with the airbrush and the detail work done under a big magnifying glass with a 000 brush. I'm still to do the chrome work around the window glass (waiting for the black to dry fully).

1:32 is a great scale for inside and this Cobra grips very well on the lino with it's fat, soft tyres. Only real drawback with this model is if it stops working for any reason, I can't pull it to bits to repair without breaking it as it's all glued together very solidly.

Thanks for looking, comments always welcomed.

Tamiya tool to show scale. Detailed dash and interior. Working headlights. Working brake and seperate tail lights.

wow, lovely car! I just got out my slotrace stuff this weekend and was again amazed by the details of those 1:32 cars. This one is looking even better! Must have been a heck of a job to make it an RC car. TOP work!

With a slotcar 1/2 the job is already done. All it needs is steering. With a static model kit it's build everything to make it RC.

Nice conversion. I have the same kit unbuilt, but no micro rc gear. If I do decide to rc it I'll be sure to bug you for clues

Mark, that is inspirational. How does she handle? Is there any chance of some chassis shots? I'd love to see under the hood.

It drives great and handles far better than the Falcon one I did (2nd try of an idea is usually an improvement). I can't dismantle this thing without breaking it though, and the underside shows nothing that you can actually see, it's all mounted above the model baseplate. I'm working on another, Porsche 917 Gulf. It's turning out even better and screws together this time.
